turn the exaust to the back put a propeler there and now you have a nice and unique go kart

@ORMEntertainment Bottom cylinders filled with crankcase oil.

Perfectly normal smokey, oily radial engine start. It's because oil drains into the lower cylinders while the engine's not runnning. And yes, like all air-cooled engines it will get hot quickly without either a prop or a fan blasting air over it.

Hello. I have a 9cy lycoming r-680 and it was on a 30ft tower for a wind machine. It had a 100" prop on it. I put it on a trailer and was going to start it without a prop just
for a minute or two. Someone said that I would wreck the engine if I ran without a prop. Is this true? Thanks Mike.

@iggy151, yes they are

Put a propeller on that damn thing so you can run it for more than 10 seconds at a time. It needs cooling.

@nibbler125 Not all radials were airplane motors.
It will be fine. Just keep the rpm's low and don't run it long. Check the cylinders for how hot they are getting.
