The relic is kept in the Temple of the Tooth and a replica is displayed in a Golden Casket on top of a brightly decorated elephant at the front of the evening parade around the streets .It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dancers and nicely decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dancers, Kandian dancers and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish colorful garments.
