This is part 10a
- Presented here in 10 parts ( about 160 minutes) of the last night of the Kandy Esala Perahera festival.
Kandy Perahera is one of the biggest Buddhist celebrations of the year in SriLanka
Esala Perahera (the festival of the tooth) is the grand festival of Esala held in Kandy Sri Lanka.
The festival is held every July/August in the hill capital of Kandy, Sri Lanka to honour the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha -- said to have been brought to the island 2000 years ago in the hair of a princess. The relic is kept in the Temple of the Tooth and a replica is displayed in a Golden Casket on top of a brightly decorated elephant at the front of the evening parade around the streets .It is very grand with elegant costumes. Happening in July or August in Kandy, it has become a unique symbol of Sri Lanka. It is a Buddhist festival consisting of dancers and nicely decorated elephants. There are fire-dances, whip-dancers, Kandian dancers and various other cultural dances. The elephants are usually adorned with lavish colorful garments. The festival ends with the traditional 'diya-kepeema'
