One of Southern Nevada's best-known artists, K.D. Matheson, will present new large-scale sculptures in the Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery August 23 through October 8, 2010, in an exhibit he calls, "Penumbra." A penumbra is a partial shadow, but the word can also refer to an outlying region, which seems the definition that applies to this exhibit. Primitive and mythical motifs and textures play heavily in Matheson's previous works. Each piece invites a peek into a fantastic world that might be found through either archaeology or space exploration, whose inhabitants might be ancient Mayans or space-suited aliens.
Known for his striking and finely-crafted vessels and busts, Matheson is constructing his new work from concrete, paper mache and cardboard. An opening reception will be held Thursday, September 2, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the rotunda. The artist will be in attendance, and the event is free and open to the public. Matheson says, "I tend to create a meeting place," within each of his works. Mathson's work has been exhibited extensively in Las Vegas as well as in Chicago, Seattle and Germany and is in collections around the globe. He was a participating artist in the first Zap public art project, in the Winchester neighborhood, and in the most recent, in the classic West Las Vegas area near Martin Luther King and West Lake Mead. His work has also been featured in books, fashion photography, and CD jacket art. The Clark County Government Center Rotunda Gallery is located at 500 South Grand Central Parkway in downtown Las Vegas, Nevada.
