Small, compact, vertical aquaponic system. 38 gallon freshwater tank connected to an old 3 gallon food bucket used as a sump. Sump drains to 3 grow tubes that total 14 grow holes. Grow tubes drain back to fish tank. 5 Tiger Barbs, 4 goldfish (3 species), and 1 c. plecco.

  • what is the purpose of the sump?

  • @fuentezlobo basically the sump holds large quantities of beneficial bacteria to convert unusable nitrogen into usable nitrogen for the plants. It can also serve as a reservoir to filter and/or hold fish waste, which would prevent fish waste from entering your grow tubes. If this happens the clumps of waste can latch onto the roots and suffocate them, preventing them from receiving nutrients and oxygen.

  • How is your system now? What kind of problems have you had? I live in a small studio apartment. I don't see how I can move into a bigger place with no job. Thanks Bush and Obama.

  • good work

  • This is awesome!

  • good idea, i like it.

  • @AquaponicsOrgaponics FTR, my tank isn't "murky" anymore. It is still highly alkaline, and it has a brown tint to the water (that it didn't have when I had the charcoal in the filter, and the ceramic thingys... now, only have the cotton to filter the junk). The slight brown tint comes from a bogwood log in my tank.

  • @JohnLeeMD Hi if the water is a cloudy white colour it is most probably a bacterial bloom. Soon the ammonia level will rise. this happens when the bacteria start to die off. Not a problem it is the natural cycle of things. Your fish will suffer from it as all the other levels will rise. You may need to find some other place to put your fish till it all starts to balance out again.

  • Can I ask you a question? I started my own aquarium aquaponic system. It seems to be going "OK" right now. It's only been a week, but so far the plants seem to be living, the fish seem healthy, and while my pH seems alkaline (7.4-7.6), the ammonia level is still negligible. I'm curious about the water color. The water is murkier than it was previously with the carbon from my canister filter in there. I wonder if murky water is a sign of something I need to address? Or can murky water be fine.

  • Nice system, check out mine on my channel.
