Hallo, und wilkommen auf Klaustrophobic German.
Hello, and welcome to Klaustrophobic German.
Last time, we learned 33 near cognates.
Can you believe it? Just two lessons, and you already know 72 words?
Today, we’re going to learn a few “anglicisms.” “Anglicisms” are American words that have been adopted into another language, in this case German.
If you want to sound truly German, it’s important to know that these “Anglicisms” are only used in conversation with your friends, or at parties, but never to anyone you’d want to show a lot of respect to.
So let’s get started. If you need to look in the info section on the YouTube video, feel free to do so.
As always, we’ll start with nouns. And please, repeat after me.
We have:
der Boss
das Business
die City
das Design
der Dress Code
das Event
Fashion, which isn’t used with an article.
das Feeling
das Fast Food
der Hit, as in music
der Job
der Manager
die Party
das Shopping
and lastly, die Show.
Now, we only have a few adjectives.
We have:
cool
hip
overdressed
and lastly, underdressed.
Not too many of those.
Another thing you’ll notice in conversation between friends are the words: Hi, Okay, and Wow. They’re just more common “anglicisms.”
You might hear a few “fake” English words used, too. For example, a cell phone is called a “Handy.”
Well, there you have it! See, you already knew some German!
If you’d like to send in mail, please send it to takemetotokio@rocketmail.com, and don’t forget your name, where you live, and how you heard about Klaustrophobic German.
