I set hand sanitizer on fire (my friend dared me to), which is easy because of its ethyl alcohol content. I was trying to spell "Hi!" with the hand sanitizer, but messed up on the exclamation mark. The experiment was semi - planned out (well... I am only a high school student, not a science teacher). I taped the match to the end of a ruler because I didnt know how high the flame was going to be, and at the end, the thing started smelling REALLY bad, so I tried to waft away the smell, and cleaned everything up before the hand sanitizer really had a chance to burn.
I have to admit, this was the worst lab procedure ever followed, so please do not repeat this at home.
Mini biology lesson: hand sanitizers with ethyl alcohol as the active ingridient kill the bacteria by actually breaking the bacterial cell, while hand sanitizers with other active ingridients try to poison the bacteria, so there is room for mutation, which ends up creating superbacteria. So, READ THE LABELS to make sure the active ingridient is some sort of an alcohol, unless you feel like becoming a living everything-resistant Petri dish.
