I think considering all the things Lincoln said and did over the course of his lifetime,this is almost like taking what he said at a particular point in time out of context, since when he said it, thats what the majority of the people needed to hear at that moment ...that it wasn't just a fight for or against slavery . he couldnt sound like an extremist if he wanted to save the union, even though I believe that he personally wanted an end to slavery. avery extremist view at the time.

You bring up a good point, and I am aware that a quote like this may sometimes be unfair. The point I want to make is that many people believe that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves, and that is simply not the truth. The so-called "freedom" that African-Americans experienced at that time was a by-product of a scheme to weaken and intimidate the south, and I'm just using his words to clear away this historical distortion. Forget about the Civil War.... negroes are still enslaving other negroes. Yahoo news reported during the World Cup 2010 that Singer Jason Mraz went to Africa to "Help end Slavery! look it up!

It had more to do with money then slavery. The North and the Industrial Revolution. You see it was much easier to turn a profit if you were a farmer in the South who owned some Slaves. Much harder to turn a profit if you were in New York paying your workers. Just a good old boy tug a war. Nothing really to do with Slavery. What sounds better we freed the Slaves for Human Rights? Or we freed slavery so we could equal the playing field and make more cash?

Correct Lincoln did get into war not to free the slaves, as so many elementary school children think. He did it to save the union, why? He took an oath to what? "PRESERVE THE UNION". Does that make him a slave lover / Supporter?? Not at all!

where are yall getting facts there were free blacks in the south the largest slave owner in nc was black. only about 20 percent had slaves so no the whole war was not about slavery. the Gettysburg address was to keep Europe from helping the south it did not free a slave the north controlled like in New Orleans. and many were agasnt slavery like lee and jackson but not grant or sherman

IN fact, in ALabama leaders were saying they were going to have to kill all their slaves if Lincoln freed them.

So - killing the slaves was the South's answer -- or keeping slavery. They didn't think it was possible to live side by side with "niggers".

The Southern leaders were getting their power, pussy, and prestige from slavery - of course they werent going to give tthat free pussy up easily.
