This method of layering snare samples can be useful with any snare sample library. The idea is rather than using EQ to say, boost the low end of a snare, you instead use a sample that has sufficient low end so that when combined with the original snare the results can lead to a more natural and more powerful sound than using EQ to boost *what isn't there in the first place*. A 9db boost at 180hz on a wimpy snare isn't going to have anywhere close to the same level of power and impact than a sample that possesses it *naturally*

If you're not using Superior Drummer and can't use it's amazing 'mid' distance room mics you could send your samples to a reverb and mix to taste.

  • my superior drummer doesnt seem to have the grooves or the mapping buttons on the top like yours ola, am i missing somthing here?

  • @Billynoggs Hey I'm not Ola, that's fearedse ! You need to update superior drummer and all those functions will be present.

  • This is really helpful. Thanks! This sounds better than boosting with EQ.

  • @Kazelfox Cheers man, good to hear!

  • Do you happen to have any tips for Steven Slate Drums? Or are the drums already good enough for subtle mixing?

  • @xx2n26 Slate snares are definitely mix-ready as is. They're good but I use them only for layering now. Reason being I find them a bit too recognizable on their own. Great for layering with more raw sounding snares!

  • @fearcomplexmusic oh sorry about me thinking you were someone else, and i just updated my superior drummer and everything is there now thanks a lot! cheers.

  • This left me dumbfounded. You're amazingly helpful and constructive.

  • Thanks buddy, you are always a help and there is always something to learn from you. I use superior and render different snares on to different tracks in Reaper and then compare each snare with the one I want to add to. But you do the testing within Superior itself which is nice. Thanks again.

  • @fearcomplexmusic true! very true! still more than I'd pump the room mic, but to each his own!

  • Hey where is that video where you actually show by muting and after, your mix with nuendo or cubase? If you can upload that again, that would be great. Thanks in advance

  • I dont mean to be really negative, by the way. but -33db thresh? That's SO crazy! If you're gonna pump it that much at least send it to a parallel bus to do it! also, the snares you're using are just kinda layering lowish mid on lowish mid!
