Nicely and tidely done! My girlfriend has done 2 headcasts on me using plaster bandages. I then used plaster of paris in the mould... Resulting bust 19 kgs / 42 lbs (before drying out)..... Still reflecting on what one can use which would be lighter.....

Thanks for posting. Just made a head cast for my Wookiee costume. You guys made it simple and very cheap and without compromising really any detail. Nowadays people are keen to over engineer and waste money! Thanks again!

Alginate would certainly give you the best "impression" regards the detail, if you are looking for a life like face mask. Casting with plaster bandage gives more of an "overall impression" you can get detail but in general I find it's more about the shape of the head rather than the lines and wrinkles and pores of the skin.
Thanks "CenterStage11" ... I do what I enjoy and I enjoy what I do. Glad to be of service ... angusbungay(dot)com

what plaster did you use for this, I used ultracal 30 for all my casts, did you have to coat his head in vaseline prior to casting?

I'm using plaster bandages laid on thick enough to create a firm shell. I use baby oil on the skin and vaseline on the eyebrows, sideburns and back of the neck .... anywhere that there is hair. Smooth it in the direction of the hair so's to flatten it better against the skin. Use enough oil to coat the skin but not too much to flood it otherwise the bandage will slip. I also sick a couple of buds of cotton wool into the ears (not too deep) so plaster doesn't run into the ear.

is there any particular place where the cast needs to be cut to take it off, or can it be halfed anywhere?

At the start of this video you see me draw a line with my fingers from the top of the head down around the ears and off the shoulders. Ultimately you don't want any undercuts, where the plaster bandage wraps 'around' something. If you take an egg and draw a line length wise around the middle that's your join line. The head is like an egg with ears ...

... The tricky part is the ears. I ususally cast in two pieces front and back including the ears, you can cast with multiple pieces, casting the ears separately. I cast the back of the head first, and before I cast the front of the head I use some vaseline along the joining edge, this helps separate the two pieces.
