The greatest space explorer of all time.

@toddsmitts Sure he´s the man, additionally he is the first astronaut to fly six times, one of the three who flew to the moon twice (him, Lovell & Cernan), one of three fastest men (Apollo X coming back to earth), performed the only Shuttle manual landing, speed record for the Lunar Rover and was close to be the sole man to fly three times to the moon when Cernan (whom John was backup in Apollo 17) injured his knee playing softball. A true legend, and we forget something, sure!

He flew 4 different spacecraft types (Gemini, CSM, LM, Shuttle). 2 of those types, he was on for its maiden voyage (Gemini and Shuttle). He was the first (and last) of his astronaut group to go up. He was first to orbit the moon alone and performed the first Lunar Orbit Rendezvous. If his third shuttle mission (to deploy Hubble ) hadn't been scrubbed in the wake of the Challenger disaster, he would have tied the record for 7 trips. He served at NASA for 42 years. Yeah, he's the man.

Something tells me, that John Young is a little nervous when on camera. He still does a great job otherwise though.

If you watch the full documentary, it's really interesting to notice the contrast of recollections of liftoff between those astronauts that were Gemini vets (Aldrin, Collins, Lovell, Scott, Young, Cernan) versus those that were rookies (Bean, Mitchell, Duke, Schmitt)
