"Recollections" a NEW CD now available via Mary Hopkin Music http://www.maryhopkin.co.uk

Born in Wales Mary began her musical career as a folk singer with a local group called the Selby Set and Mary. She released an EP of Welsh language songs for a local label called Cambrian before signing to the Beatles Apple Label, model Twiggy saw her winning a TV talent show and recommended her to Paul McCartney. She was one of the first artists to record on the Beatles record label Her debut single" Those Were the Days" got to number 1 in the UK and number 2 in the US. Selling over 8 million copies.

A little something more about Mary!
In September 2005 she released an album on her own label, "Mary Hopkin Music", called "Live at the Royal Festival Hal!" It was followed in December 2006 by a brand-new Christmas recording, "Snowed Under", released as an mp3 download via Disaudio.com
To celebrate her birthday in 2007, she released an album called "Valentine", on her new label http://www.maryhopkin.com It includes 12 previously unheard tracks dating from 1972 to 1980, three of which were written by Mary.

  • This whole album was great and should have received more attention. It was probably a few years ahead of its time. Thanks for uploading these!

  • @SufferingFoolsMusic

Yes I agree with you, it did sell well though, I think it got to number 23 in the uk album charts.. Not bad.

  • yes, I stand corrected--I almost forgot that it was an old Russian tune. I prefer "Goodbye", which I'm fairly certain Macca penned (got his demo of that song as well) Still have my original "Postcard" vinyl Lp from Mary (but later got the cd re-issue LOL) "Goodbye", "Sparrow", "Temma Harbour" and her b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l

"Fields of St. Etienne" are my faves of hers--(ps: I like this Oasis song--I never heard it b4)

  • If you can get hold of a copy of 'Oasis' by 'Oasis' it would be worth it, There are some really beautiful songs on there sung by Mary remember the classic 'True love' her vocals on that are amazing...

    Bye for now

    Pat

  • I've been a fan since 1968 --when I was 15. I'd already been a MAJOR Beatles fan but in '68 (around the same time The White Album came out) I heard on the radio in NY where I lived a dj talk about this new artist that McCartney had brought to Apple--then they played "Those Were The Days" that Macca wrote for her--mind you, I hadnt yet SEEN Mary (on the 45 cover jacket which I hadnt bought yet) but I'd never heard a voice so pure--loved her ever since. I'm glad you all do too:)

  • '...Days' was not written by McCartney but it was produced by Paul McCartney. An American called Gene Raskin (who sang with the "limelighters" and who recorded it first) wrote the lyrics for the song "Those were the days" and used the melody only from a song called "Dorogoy dlinnoyu" ("By a long road" or "along a long road") which was written by the Russian song writer Boris Fomin with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevskii

  • Thanks for posting. A brilliant LP. A supergroup for the hip Radio 2 generation. Pity the album was not followed up. Peter Skellern followed it with a couple of albums (Lovelight and Stardust Memories) and these are worth seeking out plus his albums that preceded this.

Shame to read interviews with Mary afterwards regarding this group and her unhappiness, as to me the sound is absolutely perfect

  • glad you found it... BTW its been available on CD since its first release in 1984, I had to go and buy a CD player and boy were they expensive then!

  • Could never forget Mary Hopkin. What a beautiful unique sweet voice and way of presenting songs.

  • This is very sweet. Thank you for posting.

  • I will, Thank you (Skellern and Mary seemed to have had a nice vocal blend together) ..and Pat, I believe you when you say her version of the old standard "True Love" sounds beautiful--even George Harrison did a version of it in the post-Beatle era (on his "331/3" album)and I even think Mary made mincemeat of Doris Day when she covered her "Que Sera, Sera" LOL--come to think of it, Mary could sing the PHONEBOOK and make it sound good LOL
