I'm glad that nobody is fighting on these comments. Everyone on here is just giving their points nicely. It's kind of nice.

dawkins had a more than adequate jump shot from 18- 20 ft in. The problem DD had was that the officiating at that time was much more conservative, in terms of physical play. If DD were to have started his career , say 10 years later, he would have been a dominant center in the NBA. But he was always in foul trouble, mostly for fouls that today wouldn't be called.

plus DD played on a contender and great team from the get go. Cheeks, early W.B.Free, Caldwell Jones, Collins, Erving, Toney, Bobby Jones...
If you look at those sixer teams, they got contribution from lot's of players, only erving would produce league leading stats, and even dr.j stats didn't reflect his greatness.

I agree with almost everything you think..the only caveat to that is, we both know that the "great" players throught time og the NBA benefitted from the "no call" when it comes to fouls Obviously, DD was not one of the greats and he was called more often than not. And I am not sure I totally agree with your assement officiating back in the "day". There were alot of physical teams back in the late 70' early 80's-even mid 80's-mostly in the Eastern Conference of course..

and I think more often the not, they let guys "bang" ...
and I think Both Jones you mention were very good "role" players, they were not by any stretch incredible players, but they complimented Doc very well. Thats why the first year we got Mo, we won it all. We needed a bonafide big ban. I love DD, he has a special place in my heart, because he was apart of the starting Sixer team when I first got into hoops. Last game as a sixer: game 6 LA-10 points, 1 board, 20 minutes-fouled out.

Not as tall but for power and size the late Dawkins could match Shaq no doubt
