United Nations, Geneva, 6 July 2009 - The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is holding its 2009 substantive session in Geneva at the Palais des Nations from 6 to 31 July. The Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon opened the debate. The Council would devote the first four days of the session to a high-level segment, which this year would focus on the theme current global and national trends and their impact on social development, including health. At the high-level segment participants would also undertake the Annual Ministerial Review, hearing national presentations from eight countries, and have a general debate on this years theme, which was expected to culminate in the adoption of a Ministerial Declaration. hree hundred thousands are now locked up in the death camps of Sri Lanka. Men are tortured, Women are abused and raped, Children are psychologically tormented, foreign media is banned, aid workers are blocked and the Tamils are now let to die like flies without proper food, medicine and water. Dead bodies are thrown outside the tents and let to rot while the young and old stand in the hot sun for hours to beg for food.

Speeches by the Secretary-General should be made available in transcript format, not a video feed. Video should be engaging and exciting. Perhaps his speech dubbed over informational graphics like charts and figures...
