On Sunday, October 16, the city of Oakland delivered a letter Occupy Oakland ordering the camp to comply with eight specific demands and a litany of other complaints.
In response, a small group of people wrote a letter responding to the city.
Although the letter did not pass, the majority of people in attendance supported the letter. Occupy Oakland works on a consensus-based process that requires 90% approval. The community will continue to meet until there is a proposed response that at least 90% of the General Assembly supports. Stay tuned:

Dear Mayor Jean Quan, the city government, and the people of Oakland,
Thank you for maintaining an open line of communication with Occupy Oakland. The camp has made a concerted effort to address your concerns as raised in your initial letter on Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Thank you for writing to us today to recommend we install fire extinguishers in the kitchen area. This is an oversight that we missed and we are glad you pointed it out.
First off, Occupy Oakland is committed to ensuring our community is able to use Oscar Grant Plaza and the ampitheatre for all scheduled events. There is no reason for the organizers of the October 19th Science Kick-off, the October 20th United Policy Holders event, and the October 21st wedding to be concerned they will not have access to the park. We are always happy to share our space.
The expansion of Occupy Oakland cannot be contained. More people are coming every day. Oscar Grant Plaza is a demonstration of what is possible. It is a real community born in a time where neighborhoods are becoming a forgotten relic. This movement is irresistible, and there is nothing anyone can do to stop it...
The Occupy Oakland people don't seem to realize that there wouldn't be a park, nor facilities there if other people hadn't paid for them with their tax dollars over decades. Oh - but they sort of don't have the concept of "other people" and "consideration for others" down, do they?

Wonderful movement & great letter - which would have had my vote! Its reasoned rebuttal makes the City's letter look like the ridiculous excuse for a crackdown that it is. It's a compelling reflection of the movement's strengths: non-violence, horizontal democracy, & inclusive community. And the fact that it was proposed by an articulate, mature man, helps challenge corporate media's dismissal of the movement as being a just a bunch of bored, hippy kids. Solidarity from TO!
