Just an exploration into an expansion of an age old question -- build v use. I am tormented by the relative ease and availability of Web 2.0 services and how conflicted I feel related to promoting things that live outside the academy. Just looking for thoughts.
Theres some Libre and open source software packages like phpmotion and plumi.
Did you build movelable type publishing platform? I wonder why in the Penn State blogging platform videos they fail to mention that. Its like they're trying to take the credit for developing moveable type rather then using it, extending and customizing it openly.

I don't think we can afford to 'build' these type tools. Certainly not at the quality that already exists and certainly not be able to improve them at the rate tools like YouTube are improving.
If your community is already on YouTube, can you produce enough content or compelling reasons to come to your walled garden? I don't think so.
