Was lucky enough to see Jim sing this song live a couple of years ago at Dollywood, and he still sounds absolutely great! "A row of fools on a row of stools...". What a legendary country lyric! By the way, he did the pop-a-top sound effect with a cheek pop and a "SSSSSS". Sounded as good as the recorded sound effect on the record. Songs like this never die.

Pete Drake plays pedal steel on this great original , Paul Franklin plays a virtual tribute to him on Alan Jacksons version, Petes licks are a integral part of this song especially the lick after "let some other fool sit down" at the end of first verse and at the end.
Pete Drake, legendary nashville steel player session man .
