"A Thracian mitochondrial Eve is at the origin of Romanians. The population from this territory has then migrated towards all of Europe 30-40,000 years ago" said professor Alexander Rodewald, director of the Human Biology Institute from Hamburg University during a conference hosted by the State Office for Inventions & Trademarks from Bucharest, according to a broadcast by RADOR and quoted by ziuaveche.ro.

Rodewald's addressing note was called "The origin of the Romanians - from myth to reality". "The myth is the Latin origin. Romanians' ancestors, who had this genetic background, were living here more than 5000 years ago. Proofs that this is about the oldest European population have been found in the Cave with Bones (Peştera cu Oase) and Cioclovina", emphasizes the geneticist.

There are however common genetic elements with the Anatolian populations, where the Hittites have lived and also with the Greeks, Italians and Basques. Professor Alexander Rodewald is in charge of a group which has done genetic studies on old and modern bones from Romania in order to establish the origin of the Romanian people.

The mitochondrial "Eve" has probably lived approximately 200,000 years ago - says the German scientist. The extraction of DNA from bones was very difficult because of the age of the samples. The teeth, which are the most used material for genetic studies, were extremely worn off because the locals were grinding the wheat and millet with hard rocks. Thus the flour contained extremely abrasive silex dust. Even though important mutations have taken place - caused by the migrations during the Iron Age - and after the Roman and migratory populations invasions, especially that of the Slavic people, and even if ethnic mixing has taken place during the Ottoman rule, still the dominant genetic elements are of Thraco-Dacian origin.

The same thing has been proven by the genetic studies of Mrs Georgeta Cardoş, biologist researcher at the "Victor Babeş" National Research Institute, who has investigated the Moldavian rulers tombs from Rădăuţi.

The geneticists have thus demonstrated that the descendants of Bogdan I were not Cumans, as some historians have recently claimed (i.e. Neagu Djuvara).

Alexander Rodewald, who has completed his anthropology studies in Munich, says that a genetic mutation appears in an ethnic group every 100-1000 years. The researchers in his team made genetic evaluations also on material gathered from tombs in Bucharest and Ploieşti, areas where frequent population admixtures have taken place. The small and isolated ethnic communities, such as those in the Sarmisegetuza Regia area, are not relevant because, in time they inevitably end up in endogamy. These investigations are still in their early phases and involve high costs which the Hamburg Institute cannot cover by itself.

@EvertonFooty Romans as an administrative body didn't stay for very long. But the colonists stayed. Dacia was the most colonized portion of the Roman Empire and the largest colonial effort in ancient history. The other people that migrated left their influences as well (like all countries) but they were never as organized or in such large numbers. Dacians are the ancestors of Romanians but so too are Romans. Arguing about what percentage that may be is pathetic.

@Twycross- Romans only stayed in our land for a little bit compared to other people. Hardly enough to constitute a major gene pool. We have mostly strict Balkan genes. Dacians are our ancestors.

While I recognize the importance of the Thracian element in Romanian ancestry I don't think it does anyone any justice to deny the Latin/Roman element either. It's like asking "Am I more from my mother or my father?"
