First Nations Community Food Systems is a collaborative venture between B.C. Ministry of Agriculture and Lands and First Nations Agriculture Association designed to assist First Nations in starting small scale food production and processing programs for economic development as well as a healthy way of living. Since its inception in 2006, with initial funding provided by the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport through the ActNow Initiative, the program has helped 23 First Nations across the province to start community gardens/greenhouse and local food processing initiatives and trained approximately 185 individuals in aspects of food production, processing and marketing. The program is increasing First Nations self-sufficiency in creating local, healthy food sources.
