"Happy Hanukkah" is a new Chanukah song for all ages.

However you choose to spell it --Happy Hanukkah / Happy Hanukah / Happy Chanukah -- this is Chanukah music which, like a Jewish "Feliz Navidad," folks can sing along with... listen to on radio or iPod... good for public school and synagogue choirs, too. And you don't have to be Jewish to sing or appreciate the sentiments.

Think of sending the video link to friends or family as a musical online Hanukkah greeting.

Created for Chanukah 2008, the octavo choral SAB sheet music with piano and optional trumpet has now arrived, along with octavos for 2-part treble choir with piano and unison choir with piano.

Also available: piano/vocal/guitar pop sheet music. Arrangements by Sarah Brett England. Downloadable mp3 and CD at www.carolboydleon.com.
You can read the very brief history of "Happy Hanukkah" there. To do so, please visit the website's "Happy Hanukkah" page or go directly there using this link: http://carolboydleon.com/happy_hanukkah

"Happy Hanukkah" had its Washington, DC debut at the Kennedy Center on Dec. 16, 2008 by the Encore Chorale.

Here's who you're hearing on the video:
Larry Eschler, vocals
Curt Christensen, trumpet
Steve Bloom, percussion
Derek Wille, arr. and keyboard
Carol Boyd Leon, producer

"Happy Hanukkah" (song title)
Music & lyrics by Carol Boyd Leon

Verse:
At this time of year, we wish you good cheer
As we say, "Have a happy Hanukkah -- Happy Hanukkah!"
Festival of Lights for eight days and nights,
Candles are glowing far and near.

Chorus:
Wondrous holiday of light,
Freedom shining more each night.
Wondrous holiday of light,
Freedom shining more each night.

Bridge:
Tell the story of days gone by
As the candle flames grow bright.
Ancient glory defies the night
Turning darkness into light.

Final verse:
At this time of year, we wish you good cheer
As we say, "Have a happy Hanukkah -- Happy Hanukkah!"
Festival of Lights for eight days and nights,
Happy Hanukkah to those we hold most dear,
Happy Hanukkah year after year.

  • Interesting song.I'm not Jewish though. I was just wondering when do you celebrate Hannaku? It seems like it's a different 8 days every year.

  • Hanukkah always falls on the same date on the Hebrew calendar, the 25th day of the month of Kislev. Because the Jewish calendar is both solar and lunar-based and the regular calendar is only solar-based, the dates of Jewish holidays vary when placed onto a regular calendar. Hanukkah begins any time from late Nov till late Dec.

The most dramatic change occurs whenever the Hebrew calendar inserts a leap month (which happens 7 times over 19 years). This helps keep Passover in the spring.

  • Friends, I'd appreciate if you rated the video. There are a few hateful people out there who have done what they can to lower the video's rating. Thanks.

  • With the loss of my Grandma and Mother last year I no longer have anyone to celebrate with. Your Jewish Holiday music will help ease some of the things I will miss sooo much. I still will be making my famous Latkes. Blessings to all for a Happy, Safe and Healthy Holiday Season. Thank you very much, Becca

  • I am so sorry for your losses, Becca. I am glad you'll be carrying on with your latke tradition and found plenty of latkes in my video to inspire you! If you visit my website's Gan Shirim page, you'll find a few more Hanukkah songs.

  • Yay! This is perfect for drowning out the constant Christmas music in my dorm!

  • Glad you like "Happy Hanukkah." You might even hear it on a few radio stations when Hanukkah is here. However, I wouldn't want it to "drown out" anyone's holiday celebration but rather to add to the spirit of the season. My own choir just performed it at a municipal "Festival of Lights and Carols." It was a way for us to remind those present that there's more than one holiday being celebrated this time of year...

  • @carolboydleon Just added my thumps up! I love hearing new Chanukah songs! The menorah at 0:26 is gorgeous.

Don't worry about the idiots trying to give it a low rating. They're just jealous because they can't celebrate Chanukah.

    Chag sameach!

  • ok that makes sense

  • nicely done. Chatza Mayach!

  • I married into a Jewish family and this is my first Hanukkah. I was so thrilled to find a real Hanukkah song other than just the one by Adam Sandler. He's good but it nice to here one that's more serious.
