I recently bought a Toyota Camry with a sludge problem. Is it possible to clean the engine out slowly using synthetic oil or anything like an engine additive?

It really depends on how bad the sludge is. There are products out there that can "flush" an engine out. Be careful though, if it has a lot of deposits it can dislodge large pieces at a time and clog the oil pickup screen. That can lead to oil starvation which can be a disaster. I would recommend a conventional oil instead of synthetic for now. Try changing the oil every 1000 miles or so a few times, then reevaluate sludge to see if its working. Change the oil filter every time for sure!
