Parayar was a high caste during the early centuries. They where the landlords and the people who where more closer to Kings. During those periods they where known as the messengers and given this Parai as an instrument to play and announce which will make attention of all peoples. Later stage the were degraded as low caste and since they played this musical instrument people started calling them Parayar.. Which means the one who plays this. Refer wikipedia for more info.
I don't believe in caste system when it comes to enjoying or playing music... music is a universal language. I am currently learning to play the tappu, and it's the most fun ever. Shame on people who think it must be confined to a specific caste. And shame on those who call `pariyars' untouchables... there is no more untouchable - everybody is equal under God.
