  • Fascinating. GH looked great but I don't think she was as good as VC, though for a number of reasons it is an unfair comparison. You'd have to see the entire film with her in it. A pretty tall order to top VC in that final scene though.

I think there was too much movement in the scene with GH, and it looked a bit matter of fact. Watch the VC scene: her facial expressions convey more complex emotions, and she hardly moves. For me, this works better.

  • The mistrust was unfounded. Georgia Hale worshipped the ground Chaplin walked on and had no idea to sue him. The resulting performances in this picture are far superior than if Hale had been the actress, however. Perhaps the tension between the two actors is part of the reason they seem so well together? After all, Georgia Hale could no more play the flower girl than Virginia Cherril could have played the dance hall girl of The Gold Rush

  • I think one big reason Cherrill was good was because Chaplin wasn't emotionally involved with her and was able to be objective and critical of her performance. She's not a great actress or anything and in fact she wasn't an actress at all but she was right for the part, Chaplin must have realized this putting his faith in an unknown. She really doesn't seem like a pleasant person to be around but perhaps that worked in her favor and ultimately Chaplin's.

  • I wish I knew why he hated her. Ah well, life goes on.

  • ah James Mason. Nice narration. Crazy love for Chaplin!

  • This Virginia gal is ugly and extremely conceited, and she can't understand why he had no interest? Please, get a clue! That Georgia isn't much to look at either. Maybe that is why they didn't last.

  • Listening to Georgia Hale talk about Virginia Cherrill, and how "perfect" she was as her replacement in this film made me want to take a long, hot shower. It was disgusting. It was petty and disgusting.

  • Chaplin and Georgia had an interesting relationship offscreen, an affair that lasted many years, and for the most part he trusted her judgement. When he fired Cherril, Georgia was the first one he thought to call to replace her. However, Chaplin was soon warned by a confidante of his (that for some reason never liked Ms. Hale) that Georgia might sue him for promising the part if he didn't sign her, and in a feeling of betrayal, he blew up at her and said he would never give the part to her. .

  • Hale is just dreadful, thank GOD he finished it with Virginia. she was PERFECT. She is a lady; Hale is cheap.

  • It's supposed to look like she is giving a biscuit to a dog! The emotionally difficulty of the scene relies on the idea of the tramp appearing as a dog while she was expecting a guy dressed to the T's with more money than he knew what to do with. There is a difference between what she expected and what she saw!!!! Belief is a funny trait
