A late night mini-spazz on the spasmoharmodium around the harmonic series.

It is beneficial to one's harmonic awareness to observe the harmonic series at least once a week, but problematically, this magic series of notes is rarely seen or paid any heed.

The device is a homemade MIDI cracklebox which interfaces with a MaxMSP patch which creates FM tones in harmonicity's thrall. Well... I hope the colours improve things.

  • On a more serious note, your phrasing is very interesting. Towards the end there are some especially intriguing rhythmic figures that remind me very much of sweeping arpeggios on a guitar. (about 1:18)

  • Thanks! Yep, this be them series of overtones! It's an attempt to explore this valuable scale so often suppressed on commercial instruments. That interface is very touch sensitive (like a cracklebox) so the random sweeping flourishes were almost unintended, but playing a 'wrong note' isn't a problem in the harmonic/overtone series, since every interval is naturally related. Check out Lamonte Young's Well Tuned Piano if just intonation piques thine ears...

  • those chords at 00:57 are wickedly hilariously amazing!

  • I WANT ONE OF THAT!!!!!

  • That's really wild! Now I KNOW I want some microtonal instrument of my own. Incidentally, how may I obtain the device used here? And what is it, even? : ]

  • Awesome sonoritieses.

  • I'm enjoying your approach and sensibilities. Just curious, what did you study at uni? Are you familiar with any specialized programmes in electro-acoustic music, other than the one offered at De Montfort (IOCT) in Leicester? Thanks.

  • Yes, the overtone series is the acoustic harmonic series.

  • Bravo Maestro BRILLIANT!!!

  • Now that is actually realy cool. What is it? Does it have a simple schematic?

  • it rocks

  • Gorgeous little piece of kit, that. Wanted one as soon as I heard the first flourish.
