This semester I did my sophomore English project on African American soldiers in World War 2. Specifically, I researched why they would want to fight because this country was so segregated as well as what they got out of the experience even though they did not get equal positions in the army. This is a short video clip of me interviewing three veterans and asking about their experience. This made up about 3 min of my 20ish minute presentation. One, Dr. Hawkins, fought three battles in Italy. Another, Mr. Collins, trained in the states but was never sent oversee, mainly because of his race. The last, Mr. McDaniel was a Tuskegee Airman who also never saw combat. I hope you find it interesting!
blacks fought in world war two becuase they thought it would end segregation and white people would see them not as a threat to society but, an asset to it as full fledged citizens, they saw it as a means of fully intergrating in american society. Sadly they were wrong.
