In the Final episode of the series Al-Khalili turns detective, hunting for clues that show how the scientific revolution that took place in the 16th and 17th centuries in Europe had its roots in the earlier world of medieval Islam. He travels across Iran, Syria and Egypt to discover the huge astronomical advances made by Islamic scholars through their obsession with accurate measurement and coherent and rigorous mathematics.

He then visits Italy to see how those Islamic ideas permeated into the West and ultimately helped shape the works of the great European astronomer Copernicus, and investigates why science in the Islamic world appeared to go into decline after the 16th and 17th centuries, only for it to re-emerge in the present day.

  • The power of doubt is important, and so is having the guts to question (or a system which allows questioning at all) of current [religious] dogma. Galileo and Darwin did it in their time in Europe. In present-day middle-eastern countries, it can be as dangerous as it was in the dark ages in Europe. When religious people/leaders in Iran say that earthquakes are caused by women not dressing "properly", it's dangerous to publicly question that. Such a system goes AGAINST reason and progress.

  • Fuck u

  • @ztarzcream I too wish people would understand that concept of we are all JUST HUMANs. Just thinking about I feel a better. ^.^

  • @faisita14 How I wish humans would stop believing they are ethnicities and realize we are all HUMANS. There is no such thing as a muslim or a christian or an American or whatever people think they are. It's just fantasies. We are all just human beings. World leading scientists and medieval religions are not compatible.

  • Credit is for the men who made things possible. Cradit is also for the faith they are in to make them disciplined to achieve a possibilty. The men will be forgotten but not the work, but men always connect this with faith be assumed a truth or a false. It is a way of calculation assumed from a theory.

  • This is stupid its like people believing in prophecies from other books. All that scholars do is take a line from a holy book and interpret it in their own way.

  • Thanks for asking such an important question. We write it because it is commanded to us in Quraan.Furthermore we write it with all the Devine Prophet's names, from Prophet Adam to Prophet Mohammad, including Prophet Abraham, Prophet Josepfh, Prophet Jacob, Prophet Moses, Prophet Jesus , Peace be Upon All the Prophets Of The God..Its to show our love and respect for Them, and Alos because it has been ordered.. Thanks Again, May God Bless us All..Amin

  • @00anonymous00 "Prophet Mohammad ( peace be upon him) " Tater's been wonderin about that . Why do Muslims always say Mohammad that way? If you don't say PBUH or spell it out, folks gonna get on your case?
