I had a small bit of cancer under the paint, until I went to grind it off. I ended up with a 1"x2" hole in the windshield pillar. After digging out some old putty the factory had put inside there (which probably caused this whole problem in the first place), I cut out a small bit of sheet metal to the shape/size of the hole, and welded it in.
@DavidCousins I believe that leads to melting the tip that the wire comes out of. I've seen some really gorgeous welds come from a friend of mine and he has his wire a good inch and a half or so out. But I've never taken any classes. The reason my wire kept getting so long is I my machine just wants to feed the wire too fast. I had it turned all the way down, and it still came out too fast. I've never really tried soldering sheet metal before, so this was definitely an adventure. :)

When I Mig weld, I keep the exposed wire much much shorter. I'm no pro, so take my comment as from an amateur. It's my understanding that keeping the wire closer to the Mig gun, you cloud of flux gas better controlled.
Great idea fixing the rust hole yourself.
