I heard about this a few years ago, and also there were studies that came out about these "purity commitments" that daughters make with their fathers. It goes by many names including "purity balls" and "purity rings." The study came out around 2008 about this and not surprisingly concluded that girls who make these purity commitments are AS LIKELY to have sex as girls who don't make this purity commitment. The study also found that they are LESS LIKELY to use a condom.

@hotty1100 Actually there is something called an Integrity Ball for boys. But rather than pledging their purity to their mothers, they are told to abstain from sex to keep other women "pure". The idea is that a pure woman is the best gift to a future husband, so they are telling them not to destroy another man's gift. Still smacks of regarding women as property of males, first of their fathers then their husbands.
