June 27, 2009, snorkeling at Key Largo, Florida. The statue is only in about 8M/25' of water and the out-stretched hands are about 3 M/15' from the surface. It is located near Dry Rocks, about six miles east-northeast of the Key Largo Cut, in the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
It is a copy of "Il Cristo Degli Abssi," located in the Mediterranean Sea near Genoa, Italy. The original statue was cast by artist Guido Galletti, and was modeled after Italian swimmer/diver Duillo Mercanet. It was placed in 1954.
In 1961 Italian SCUBA entrepreneur Egidi Cressi commissioned the second casting from the original mold, and donated it to the Underwater Society of America. The statue ended up in storage at O'Hare airport in Chicago, waiting for a home. Senator Spessard Holland of Florida helped John Pennekamp Park to get the nod, where it was placed on August 25, 1965.
Today, Christ of the Abyss is one of the most famous and popular underwater sites in the only underwater park in the world.
Unfortunately, on the day of our trip we encounter murky and choppy water, so the filming conditions were far from ideal,(from the snorkeler point of view). I also have filmed a large eagle spotted ray in vicinity, (check my other footage)

  • Thank you for the comments, but I stand by my music choice, is a neutral way to present my video due the nature of the subject. The piece is a very important piece of classical music: L.V. Beethoven, Symphony No.3 in E Flat major, Eroica/O 55. In my view is hard to find any link between "Eroica" and outdoor fairs. Last but not least... the copyright on this interpretation expired, (is in C.C.L. category now), so I could use it legally and in compliance with YT copyright requirements.

  • very cool, we're goin snorkling there in a couple of weeks..

  • great footage, poor choice in audio. Sounds like music from an outdoor fair or something. should have used something sweeping and dramatic. Interesting sculpture though. One day the statue of liberty will look like that too

.To answer the why/how question from shanemiro, try typing "christ of the deep" in google. Answer the question yourself lazy-ass.

  • lol thats cool

  • why is that there? How did it get there?
