On September 26, 2010, The Five Knuckle Shuffle (FKS) was asked to play the outside patio with the Beaten Path at a Make-A-Wish Foundation Charity Event, hosted by Striker's Pub in Pottsville, Pa. FKS consists of Erin Bailey and Keith Scharlach sharing guitar and vocal duties. Erin had only played a hand full of live shows with Keith at this point, and was still learning the 30 songs necessary to play live shows... at least in the live music tradition of Schuylkill and Berks Counties.
The video for this footage was taken by "Shooter" Dan Vanlinski, a member of the Beaten Path, and long time guest Fern Ave Cameraman. Additional still camera footage was captured by a Zoom Q3 on a tri-pod. Special guest musicians consisted of Craig Zuber, the Beaten Path's Percussionist and background vocalist. Midway through the first verse, Jim Heller from Adrenalyn and the Beaten Path decided to come up and join Five Knuckle Shuffle's jam on bass. FKS played very early in the evening of the event, but it is a popular formatted style of fund raiser shows with several bands volunteering entertainment.
"Mary Jane's Last Dance" is a Tom Petty song that was consistently a part of the FKS songs chosen to play at live shows, simply because it's danceable, and people like to sing along to it. Let's face it, Tom Petty pretty much rocks. So, Erin was still learning the song at the time of this video, and in later shows, shared lead guitar duties on the track in live performances. However, at the time of this show, she had only played the song once or twice, and was still learning it. FKS was formed in a "Jam-a-Long" format show hosted by Keith Scharlach under his stage name, Mr. Nice Guy at Club 1402 in Reading, Pa. FKS has always welcomed guest musicians to perform live at our shows, and 99% of the time, it is completely unrehearsed... as the version of the song in this video was completely unrehearsed.
It is fun to look back at history and see what FKS sounded like at earliest shows. Enjoy this impromptu version of Five Knuckle Shuffle performing "Mary Jane's Last Dance." And don't forget to leave some comments and feedback... Thank you for watching!
