At the start of the film, the man is eating 'rarebit', a cheese fondue sometimes prepared with 'spirits' (usually wine). The consumption of which could produce mild hallucinations and strange dreams. This guy obviously loves it making him a fiend for the rarebit. Windsor McKay's inspiring comic strip of the same name is an American masterpiece of comic art as are all of his other works and well worth seeking out. McKay was also a masterful pioneer of cartoon animation.
