CHAN:
Mainland Chinese Internet users are finding that networks are being monitored more closely than ever before. Sites with politically sensitive content are often blocked. Even some harmless websites have been filtered. And as the numbers of Chinese who know about the 』Great Internet Firewall』 grow, so does their resentment.

STORY:
When CCTV reporter Hu Ziwei announced her divorce on the Olympic Channel, the clip was widely circulated online. But soon afterward, the Chinese Communist Party announced it will control online video website viewing. Websites like YouTube, Wikipedia and MySpace have all been blocked. Mainland Internet users like Mr. Chow are very upset about this. People like him use special software to avoid firewall security to browse these websites.

[Mr. Chow, Internet User]:
』I always use software tools to break the Internet blockade, such as Freedoor, Wujie, Garden, Shijie Tong and Fire Phoenix.』

Western companies have also cooperated with the communist party. Google filters and monitors its own online content. Microsoft』s MSN monitors individual user』s views on their assigned space. Yahoo offers Chinese users』 information to the CCP.

[Xiong Yuxiang. Internet User]:
』In applying to host the Olympic Games, the CCP promised to improve human rights to the international community, but now there』s no improvement of human rights at all. On the contrary, it increases its pressure. Whenever there』s democracy in the content, it is filtered out. Many websites are blocked, some e-mails are monitored or are not allowed through.』
China』s Internet population is expected to increase to over 250-million people this year. Chinese mainly use the Internet for entertainment. About 40 percent read the news and just over ten percent use it for e-mail.
