HALF MOON BAY, Calif. - The Coast Guard spent the afternoon patrolling the waters and cliff sides near Half Moon Bay, Calif., during the Mavericks surfing competition.

The large waves brought out the surfers as well as their support boats a group of spectators in the water. The Coast Guard Cutter Sockeye and a rescue boat from Station Golden Gate were both on scene all day in case the need arose to respond to an emergency. A rescue helicopter from Air Station San Francisco was on stand-by in case the rescue crews were needed near or on the near-by cliffs.

  • alright, so whose flying the bird?

  • its funny 1 contests a year and everybody has got their panties in a bunch lol think about how when the cops kicked everyone (locals) off the beaches after hours no more hanging at the beach back in the day yuppies took over shit have a contests have Ten! Surf City go off.

  • Watching this made me think: whoever suggested that Mavericks be a nature preserve may have had a point. There's got to be a way to limit the number of boats and jet skis out there. That was ridiculous. Cool video, though.

  • its just sublime to see people who love surf and ocean !! C'est trop beau de voir cette foule, de voir ces gens passionés par l'océan et par le surf, ça devait être une grande fête ce jour là !!

  • Gosh imagine when Grant and those guys first paddled out there ALONE!!!! no boats or C.G. there to make sure they were ok. Spooky!

  • its good they were there especially with the rouge waves if anyone got hurt they could get help quickly thank you coast guard.

  • Always got a pit in my stomach when I saw the orange choppers flying low, but was always glad they were there.

  • Must have been really annoying for the people in the water
