www.mysticprairie.net - Showing how the blade runs on the ground, and in the direction that it is pointing. The blade shears the grass off near the base of the plant. You cut a long narrow strip of grass with each stroke. There is no "chopping" involved. You don't need a lot of velocity either.
I had to mow very slowly in order to show the grass being cut with the close-up from the "scythe-cam" (otherwise all you would see is a moving green blur.) Normaly you mow faster than that; but only because it's more efficient, not because you need the speed in order to cut the grass. When learning how to mow, I recommend starting rather slowly, and learn the cutting-action of the blade. Once you have a feeling for it, then you can speed things up.
My camera person makes a brief appearence in the last scene.
P.S. For you scythe "techie's", the hafting angle of my scythe blade is fairly closed. In the close-up footage of the blade, the hafting angle appears very open for some reason. It must be an optical illusion created by the curvature of the lens. In the scenes shot from further away it appears normal.
