Aston Villa comfortably saw off Wigan 2-0, with goals from Gabriel Agbonlahor and Darren Bent, with the excellent Barry Bannan pulling the strings.
Villa had the first sight of goal when Agbonlahor blazed over under pressure and Bent headed over from Bannan's cross as the home side continued to press.
Ali Al Habsi stood tall to deny Bent but Bannan could not be kept out of the picture as he teed up Agbonlahor who escaped the attentions of Gary Caldwell to blast in his fourth of the season (36).
Wigan were stung into action and a mistake by Fabian Delph allowed Victor Moses to tee up Franco Di Santo whose low cross-shot flashed narrowly wide.
