Most recent, 1.5 minute cluster of episodes on 6-25-10, prompting us to return to Stanford Hospital with recent videos and frequency log.
Our 2 year old son starting doing this right after turning two years old. He puts his head down, squints his eyes and appears to be out of it for 5-15 seconds at a time. Initially it was a few times a week, now that he is almost 2.5 yrs old it happens almost everyday and sometimes 2-3 times per day. We've taken him to Children's hospital in Oakland, an EEG was done while they videotaped him for about 36 hrs. He did have a very brief "episode" but the EEG did not show any seizure activity. The nuerologist suggested that it was just behavorial. We don't quite understand or agree with that. A few months later he continued to do this and we went to Stanford's Lucille Packards Children's nuerology dept. The nuerologist agreed that it may not be seizures but to monitor him and keep a diary and video tape as much as we can. If it worsened or became more frequent they suggest doing another EEG and or try medications. We are not wanting to put our child on meds if we are not sure what this is. We are wanting to know if there are other children doing the same thing and wondering if there is something we can do or if he will outgrow it or if it is just behavorial. It's an odd thing he does and we want to figure it out. Any helpful feedback or info would be appreciated, most other doctors and people say it sounds like peite mal seizures, but nuerologists are not sure and EEG was normal.

  • Can you get any sort of reaction in him at all? If he's not responsive at all, I'd say absence seizure.. I do that sometimes when I have those, from what I'm told.. I hope all is fond out for you guys.. praying!

  • @Gretchenfan76 Sometimes he seems unresponsive but they are so quick it's hard to tell. His Dr. saw him do it & was talking to him & he'd look at her but still head down & squinting. Dr.said he seemed to be alert but thought it was odd. It happens a lot when he's eating & he was eating cheerios at the Dr.'s office. Coincidence or something he is eating in his diet or just easier to notice when he is sitting and confined in his chair. Do you have video of you doing the same thing?

  • @cwtness1 No unfortunetly I don't. I think I have every other type of my seizure except that one, hard ones to catch. I really hope you get answers soon

  • If it's not seizures, I'm thinking it's his vision. Maybe he's having a little problem with his eyesight and that's his way of seeing more clearly. I remember when I was little, I used to notice how one of my cousins watched TV with his head facing his right or his left and his eyes rolled to the side towards the TV. Later I understood that it was because he needed glasses and doing this was his way of seeing more clearly. Hopefully you guys figure out what's wrong, your son is really cute (:
