Summer '08 in Tepoztlan brought a surprise to the house compound. Apparently there was a pair of birds who had made a nest on the side of an overhang under the roof near the living room area and were raising their chicks there. In case you didn't realize that birds make nests and raise babies.
The birds themselves were wonderful little animals with a trilling song. I would spend long hours watching them wheel through the air snapping up insects for several minutes before homing in on the nest for a quick feeding pass and darting away again.
The babies themselves were not wonderful little creatures. As the owner of finches I can tell you that there is hardly any creature more wrong than a baby bird; these particular ones, on a sneaky close inspection, looked like nothing else so much as tiny little onld men. There was a nest of tiny only men outside the window. They were quite loud and heavy poopers as the overflowing foot-tall flower pot under the nest stood in testiment to. Due to their horrible manners and annoying habits, I dubbed them "Los Faos" or "Los Fao Pocos", or The Little Uglies.
