The UN Special Rapporteur on food Olivier de Schutter in his report to the United Nations Human Rights Council warned that bad nutrition is creating more sick people. He called for more agricultural subsidies to increase production of healthy foods such as cereals.

    The description is disappointing, especially if it came from staff at UNOHCHR. It goes to show the need for increased understanding of our food system and the impact it has on our health. Living off of a cash crop diet kills.

    The description of his report above, particularly with respect to cereals, is inconsistent with what he is actually saying. He was saying that the health implications of subsidies towards a narrow range of cereals (soy, maiz, wheat, cash crops) was largely ignored and it led to poor nutrition. He is not calling for MORE subsidies to increase production of cereals, but rather a rearranging of subsidies to produce a wider range of healthy foods (fruits&veggies).
