Great, great trumpet solo.
But...the piano...oh well. Whatever. Trumpet players are used to having to set tempos. Even in the best of symphonies, conductors can get lost...not unheard of for a principle trumpet to lay the smack down on a few notes to help everyone get back on beat.
It's not an ego thing, either. It's just a very audible instrument, so it does the job.

Variation 4 literally sounds like two trumpets playing simultaneously...I have no idea how anyone has the air and tonguing power to do that. It astounds me!
