Robert Delahunty, who now works as a law professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law, co-wrote a series of memos with John Yoo that basically declared the Geneva Conventions did not apply to Bush's "war on terror". These memos provided a "golden shield" so Bush-Cheney and others who conducted torture would be protected from criminal prosecution. Delahunty, Yoo and other Bush lawyers thus "legalized" the practice of torture by the U.S. Delahunty and other St. Thomas law professors extol the "war president powers" that they say, essentially place the president above the law and allow the president to override Congress and Judiciary during a time of war.
Coincidentally Dick Cheney's book (for which he has been paid several million dollars) comes out this week in which he reportedly boasts, as George Bush and George Tenet did, of ordering torture.
Despite the apparent conflict of interest as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar sits on the St. Thomas Law School's Board of Trustees. Although she's been repeatedly asked to look into the torture issue, she has refused in both her St. Thomas Board Oversight capacity as well as her Senate Judiciary capacity.
Torture is not the answer... just as war is not the answer... War criminals need to be brought to justice...
