"Big Fat Ham" by Jelly Roll Morton was recorded by Morton in 1923 for Paramount. Jim learned it in High School from a Turk Murphy/Wally Rose vinyl album purchased at the famous Jazzman Record Shop in LosAngeles. Jim learned it via a "take down" from the vinyl since he could not find the original music. This piece resurfaced recently in the movie,"The Legend of 1900" in which actor Clarence WilliamsIII portrayed Jelly Roll Morton in a "cutting contest" with cruise ship pianist, actor Tim Roth.Legend has it that
"big fat ham" was a reference to the Storyville contest between the "Ladies of the Evening" who would compete for a prize ham by high-kicking a ham that was suspended from the ceiling. This possibly was the beginning of extreme sports. It might be noted that the lack of undergarments was guaranteed to attract a crowd. Most often Mike Lala's club in Storyville hosted such events.

I took my first piano lesson when I was 11 years old. Then went into classical piano. By the time I went into college I majored in music theory and composition. I have been a professional full time pianist since I was 16 years old.
