Teaching new material. Part 4 of 6 of my teaching English workshop.

* Teach Song ( http://genkienglish.net/songs.htm ) then Game ( http://genkienglish.net/games.htm) to practise the target language

* Go straight to using a song without any drilling of language. Saves a lot of time.

*Always include actions, cute pictures, melody, as many senses as possible to maximise chances of remembering each word.

* Teach what kids want to be able to say, not what you want to teach.

* Keep the happy, funky, cool stuff for the end. End on a high note.

* Teach one question + around 8 answers per lesson.

* If 8 is too much, split it in two and do a mini game in between, like we did with the "I like everything game" (http://genkienglish.net/Ilikeeverything.htm )

* A game for a game's sake is no good. Every game is there to practise the English in a fun way.

* Be as genki as you can when teaching the song, then get the kids doing the game as quickly as possible so you can get on with preparing the next stuff.

  • Hi! I stumbled across this video and it has been so helpful already! One question.....I am teaching English to 1st-6th graders in Mexico. I see that this course was specifically designed for Japan, but is it adaptable for other countries? Also, what age group is this for? Thank you!

  • @bktip Hello, this workshop just happens to be in Japan. Genki English is used all over the world, in other 180 countries. There are lots of teachers using it in Mexico!

Age wise I developed it for primary school years 1 to 5. But many people are having great success with kids as young as two or even high school and adult learners!

  • Do you have a curriculum for intermediate children???? I love using this program with my 2-5 year olds. My 6-9 year olds demand harder topics. I love your style and want to progress my students further. Do you have any recommendations?

  • @blackkinu23 There's a new "advanced" section on the Genki English site!

  • the warmup could take a little long if youre teaching a longer lesson. If the warmup taes too long for my students or has too much info they will be more focused on the "game" side of it and not the new material-theyd want to play more and more of the game.please correct me if you think I'm wrong ;Im very open minded-what do you think?

  • In Genki English the warm up, songs and games are actually where the students learn the new material, so in effect the whole lesson becomes a game. Then after a few weeks the kids think "just a minute, I've been learning stuff here!" even though they didn't know it at the time!
