Yeah, bang on the register, that’s the way to get it open. It was probably empty anyway but if it weren't it would have been a better idea to make the clerk open it rather than shooting him for no reason. These guys are unusually stupid even for robbers. They'll go down for attempted murder instead of just armed robbery, if ever caught. Maybe it was a hit disguised as a robbery? Don't know why you'd want to assassinate a store clerk though.
