Barnaby would not move once i was on his back. I tried using a fixed target with treats placed on the other side of the paddock. It clearly did the trick !

  • Thanks for posting this video. Sounds like you are on your way to getting into a donkey's head. A donkey's first reaction to fear is to stop. Shifts in balance and changes in footing are more scary to them than the stray dog or balloon.

Remember when he is being resistant, check his breathing and heart rate. A scared donkey often times looks just like a calm donkey! Have fun and feel free to look up donkey lists on yahoo. Lots of people helping each other training their riding donkeys.

Thank you so much for your donkey tips. Since this video I am in his ''head'' and he is in mine. Communication both verbal and body language is very special almost scary. Had to take some time off riding training and due to restart again.Loved what I saw on your channel and hope to reach the same standard riding one day !Yahoo donkey click group was invaluable to me .

  • Perhaps you should watch Crystal Ward's DVD on donkey training. You are doing most things right, but could use a few pointers.

Hi . Sorry I missed your comment. I looked at Crystal Ward videis at the start when I couldn't pick up his feet ! Will have another look thanks

  • have you tried having a helper lead him while your on him? maybe that would help. i know how it is trying to do it yourself! good work. he's a handsome guy!!

  • Thanks for your advice ! Yes I have a friend who leads sometimes when we go out. Barnaby does 'his own thing 'so we still have a way to go but doing well. Do you have a donkey ? I found that clicker training suited him best. he was a real handful as a youngster and I had no experience !

  • yes, i have two standards, one 7 yrs old and one about 4yrs. the 7 year old is awesome, very easy going, no troubles, the 4 year ols hasn't been handled much so i'm using the clicker training on her. I went from barely being able to pet down to her knee yesterday to picking up a foot~!! ( first time ever with her!)

  • Thank you so much !. I try and he responds so well but it has been difficult sometimes. Youing donkeys are a handfull.

  • aw isnt he good! hes an absolute babe!

  • fantastic :D he is coming along quite nicely soon he will be absolutely stunning to ride :D hopefully with a softer mouth than Njika. 5* and good luck for the future
