Brother and sister Enrique and Rosa flee persecution at home in Guatemala and journey north, through Mexico and on to the United States, with the dream of starting a new life. It's a story that happens every day, but until Gregory Nava's groundbreaking EL NORTE (The North), the personal travails of immigrants crossing the border to America had never been shown in the movies with such urgent humanism. A work of social realism imbued with dreamlike imagery, EL NORTE is a lovingly rendered, heartbreaking story of hope and survival, which critic Roger Ebert called "a Grapes of Wrath for our time."

  • You guys have to understand that this movie was made 26 years ago. I bet if they made this movie now that it would be ten times better than Sin Nombre!!

  • i love this movie but it was so sad in the end.

  • i only clicked on this because in my spanish class they made me watch it and i was kinda wondering if it was actually real

  • esta pelicula es muy buena y la verdad me recuerda a todo lo que se sufre para poder estar en este perro pais, no me puedo quejar porque estando aqui puede encintrar el amor de mi vida.

  • We watched this film in my Spanish 4 class. My teacher says that the head hanging at the end is Arturo's head. Such a sad movie. I hope Enrique didn't give up and got what he'd dreamed about!

  • @Boudosaved I don't believe the director "chose" to end the film that way. That's the story ... in a sad sense, the father's death and sacrifice was in vain. In "the end" his son travels to El Norte and in spite of everything remains just another pair of arms to do the work of the rich, just as in Guatemala. It shows the futility of this too common story and cycle. But it doesn't have to stay that way.

  • @lingo1208 Thanks. I do recall the father telling him that. I think the ending is more realistic and less "Hollywoodized".

  • @Boudosaved He was rememebring what his father told him about the peasants always seen a a pair of strong arms..no matter where they go.. HE realizes that after the long journey.. He's just another pair of strong arms to work.

  • Just watched this film and learned Zaide's panic attack in the rat/sewer scene was real as she had a phobia of rats. I loved this film and only wonder why the director chose the film to end the way it did. I'm not saying he should have ended it more upbeat. I just want to know what it is supposed to mean as I have heard in Latin cinema the hanging of a decapitated head suggests suicide. Is that what the brother does?

  • hijole wuey esta peli esta de la chingada

  • we watched this in my spanish class and the relationship between the siblings is just ridiculous. there was definitely some incest going on behind the scenes.

  • Este es le mejor video ke he visto ke trate deEl Norte....lo vi en mi clase de espanol con mrs. Blanc
