The works Porsche 962Cs gave the impression of being stronger but Klaus Ludwig gave manager Nobert Singer some anxious moments when he slowed at Arnage, and the 962 hiccuped to the pits at little more than running speed. The drive was delivered by nothing more powerful than its started motor.
The reserve pump was barely functioning, and the six-cylinder was just about ticking over . "It was a big problem" said Ludwig, "If the pits had been 500 metres further away I don't think I'd have made it."
In 2007, Norbert Singer admitted, "Ludwig's mistake of running out of fuel." Derek Bell is equally clear on the subject: "The reserve? Well, it worked perfectly well for the rest of the race..."
He lost two laps right away, going down to fifth place, but the Porsche was none the worse for wear and before long he, Hans-Joachim Stuck and Derek Bell had retrieved most of the deficit.
