Improving aerodynamics means that for the same speed, the more aerodynamic vehicle will require less power and use less fuel. Redesigning bodywork is considerably cheaper than redesigning engines and drivetrain yet can reap greater efficiency gains.
That's because of the square cube law. To double the speed of a vehicle the drag goes up by the square but the power required goes up by the cube. 8 times more power!
For a set speed, Halve the drag, 4times less power is required

I don't think it was necessary to make the car ugly (huge smile face on front end) in order to improve aerodynamics. I still like the car though.
