The Bar-Kays - (Four members of the band died in a plane crash in 1967. Singer Otis Redding was also on the plane.)

Jimi Hendrix (Died in 1970 from a possible overdose of sleeping pills. His death was never fully explained.)

Sam Cooke (In 1964, Cooke was shot dead at age 33 by a hotel manager who claimed Cooke threatened her. The courts ruled it justifiable homicide.)

Otis Redding (Died in a plane crash at age 26 in 1967.)

John Coltrane (Nicknamed Trane, died from liver cancer at age 40 in 1967.)

Miles Davis (Died in 1991 from a stroke at age 65.)

Junior Walker (Died in 1995 from cancer at age 64.)

Jackie Wilson (Wilson suffered a massive heart attack while singing Lonely Teardrops on the Dick Clark Show in 1975. He fell and hit his head, which left him comatose. For the next eight years and four months he was in a vegetative state until his death at age 49 in 1984.)

Sammy Davis (Died in 1990 from throat cancer at age 64.)

Ella Fitzgerald (Died in 1996 from complications with diabetes at age 79.)

Mahalia Jackson (Died in 1972 from heart failure and diabetes complications at age 60.)

Elvis Presley (Died in 1977 at age 42 from prescription drug intoxication.)

Z.Z. Hill (Died from a heart attack in 1984 at age 48.)

Al Jackson (Drummer for the band Booker T. & the M.G.s and great song writer for Stax Record Label artists. He was murdered in his home in 1975 at age 39. It is believed that his wife had him killed but charges were never filed against her.)

Marvin Gaye (Shot dead by his own father in 1984 at age 44.)

The Temptations (Singing group that earned 14 number 1 singles and three Grammys. Only one member is still alive.)

King Curtis (While carrying an air conditioning unit into his apartment, he found his access blocked by two men administering drugs to themselves. He asked them to move, there was a scuffle, and one of the men stabbed him to death. His death was witnessed by singer, Aretha Franklin. Curtis was age 37.)

Billie Holiday (Nicknamed Lady Day, died from cirrhosis of the liver in 1959 at age 44.)

Mary Wells (Died from larynx cancer and pneumonia in 1992 at age 49.)

Tupac Shakur (Shot dead in a drive-by shooting in 1996 at age 25.)

Notorious B.I.G. (Real name was Christopher Wallace, also referred to as Biggie Smalls, was shot dead in a drive-by shooting in 1997 at age 24.)

Pearl Bailey (Died of coronary artery disease in 1990 at age 72.)

Duke Ellington (Died of lung cancer in 1974 at age 75.)

Count Basie (Died of pancreatic cancer in 1984 at age 79.)

Donny Hathaway (Died in 1979 from suicide at age 33.)

Dizzy Gillespie (Died of pancreatic cancer in 1993 at age 75.)

Louis Armstrong (Nicknamed Satchmo, died of a heart attack in 1971 at age 69.)

Johnnie Taylor (The singer of this song, died of a heart attack in 2000 at age 63. Soul Heaven was his last song recorded. In one verse he sang, I didnt want to wake up, I was having such a good time.)

if trane had died in 1954 we probably wouldn't even know who he was. but it was a great tribute but trane died in 67

You can say what you want about Elvis. The man knew where the talent was..It was across the tracks in those little Blues joints and dives. Give him credit for at least learning what he got from these greats of soul music!
