For English speakers you may find "vulgar" not to be a colloquial word. But for Romance language speakers, it's part of our daily vocabulary. We don't need a dictionary to understand what "dog" or "cat" mean, nor do we need it to understand what "vulgar" means.
-
Please look it up yourself you lazy moron and by the way also look up about Romance languages, which you obviously know nothing about. You have nothing to teach, I am sorry to say that. You have a lot to learn. (adjective 1 lacking sophistication or good taste. 2 making explicit and inappropriate reference to sex or bodily functions. 3 dated characteristic of or belonging to ordinary people.)
-
lol! I don't care if you were a native speaker or otherwise but for goodness sake, plz look up the Oxford Dictionary for the meaning of "vulgar".
-
Ha, who are you to teach me words of Latin root? Do you even speak a Romance language? I do, and natively. "Vulgar" is a negative and offensive word, much different from "unrefined". You don't know who you are talking to. Don't even come close to me on language issues. Visit my website, and learn. You have no clue on Sino-Dene, no clue on Chinese nor Western linguistics, yet you are giving lectures on language issues? Give me a break.

Plz look up the dictionary for the meaning of "vulgar". It means "unrefined". The lyrics are indeed unrefined. I did not accuse this song of profanities but opined that it is unrefined. What has this got to do with clinging on to imperial days or chinese empire?
-
I know where you are coming from. But I think this version is "folksy" instead of "vulgar". It contains no profanities and overall it's just trying to be cute. Trust me, if this song's been played by Ukrainians, it's not vulgar. You attitude is exactly what separates Teochew people from the rest of Hoklo people, which is a shame. Chinese Empire finished a long time ago, please let go your memories of good ol' imperial days. Even Rock'n'Roll is part of classical music, now.

Thanks, but we are not talking about Teochew opera here. We are talking about this song. A song is made of its melody and its lyrics. Neither the melody nor the lyrics here is from the Teochew opera version. The lyrics has some typical wordings of the Taiwanese dialect, like 糕糕纏. Nothing against Teochew opera or 泉州南音, they are valuable humanity patrimonies, but this song is famous worldwide not because of Teochew opera.
This was the one of my favotite Hokkien song that I listened 30 years ago too!
