Here is a clip from the movie "The Crucible" based on the book "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller. This is one of the ending scenes in which John Proctor (Daniel Day Lewis) tells Judge Danforth why he can't sign the document which would declare him to be a witch which would therefore save his life. @Ken9284 the prostitution thing is 1 of many rumors that started up. One says she cmitted suicide after fleeing to the west indies and another says she died in boston as an elderly single spinster, so there's nothing to actually prove any of the rumors.

@actressprincess2 yes he did. Back then a person's name was everything to them and their decendants. He refused to sign because then his name would be associtaed with this bad stigma--as they thought of it at the time--and would affect how his decendants were treated. Obviously we see today the accusers and judges names were tainted through history and the accused are viewed as innocent victims.
