he should've also been nominated for best director for Rachel Rachel in 1969 though he wasn't and at the time Joanne threatened to resign from the motion picture academy in protest of him being passed over for a nomination. though he'd have had very little chance of winning as Carroll Reid was the darling of the voters that year and won the oscar
